Discover the latest happenings in the August 2021 newsletter from the Missionary Sisters of Service and our mission entity, Highways and Byways – A Community of Service. Within these pages, you’ll find inspiring stories of community support and dedication, particularly in the face of ongoing global challenges.

A highlight of this edition is the announcement of the 2021 Small Grants Program, which provided funding to 43 diverse organisations. These grants are making a tangible difference across the country, supporting initiatives focused on caring for communities, promoting healing, and looking after our land and waterways. You’ll get a glimpse into the breadth of these efforts and the commitment of local groups.

The newsletter also features specific projects, such as the ‘Restoring Nature and Communities’ program in Tasmania, a 20-week initiative focused on ecological restoration that offers employment and training. This program is even being studied by the University of Tasmania for its health benefits. You can also read about the long-standing work of the Walker Flat & Districts Progress Association in South Australia and a joyful jewellery workshop organised by the Weemelah Country Women’s Association in New South Wales, the revitalisation of a garden at the Granite Belt Support Service Inc. in Queensland, and the important conservation work being undertaken by Frog Safe in Queensland.

This August also marks significant milestones for the MSS, including the 50-year anniversary of their foundation in the Port Pirie Diocese and the 20th anniversary of the passing of our founder, Fr John Wallis. This newsletter offers an opportunity to reflect on the enduring mission of service that guides the work of the MSS and our mission entity, Highways and Byways – A Community of Service, which supports many of community projects.
