On Monday 25 November, while members of the Melbourne-based MSS were still in Hobart following the Bruny Island pilgrimage, we had the ‘official farewell’ of our MSS archives from Hobart. We gathered at State Cinema coffee shop across from The Wallis Centre in Hobart, where our archives have been housed for many years. Bernadette Wallis MSS gave three presentations to the Archdiocesan Archives team, gifting them two chalices which had belonged to Archbishop Tweedy (he was Archbishop of Hobart at the time the MSS had started in 1944 and had been an important part of the discernment with Fr John Wallis, which led to the beginnings of our congregation).
At the gathering, Bernadette explained, Archbishop Tweedy had given the MSS the two chalices, one of which was an ordination gift to him (so it is now 98 years old!). As well as the two chalices, Bernadette gifted the Hobart archives a photo of the original group of sisters, the founding members of the MSS. It was a day of great celebration and thanksgiving. We look forward to sharing more about the MSS archives as they transition to Melbourne.
